Walk Don't Run
04:24
|
|||
The orders came, we looked around
I was as scared, as I’ve ever been
I’m looking out, along the line
It was like nothing I’d ever seen
I had hoped to live my life well
But I know I’m going to die here
Walk don’t run, walk don’t run, don’t run
We were boys, we’d written home
To our mums, to say goodbye
We couldn’t say, what we had seen
We could only cry, could only lie
I had hoped to live my life well
But I know I’m going to die here
Walk don’t run, walk don’t run, don’t run
...a song from the trenches of World War 1, though it could be anywhere, by any soldier. Following orders, hoping to be brave but knowing that the stench of death is all around and that he is likely to die very soon. Inspired by Catherine Alletson’s trip to the battlefields.

Hold My Story
03:09
|
|||
Though it’s black now
Black as the blackest night
Love is still love
Pain
Through the pain of a broken heart
Life goes on
The war that wasn’t so great, fall from grace, can you hold my story?
Tired now
Tired as the tiredest night
Fear is still fear
Alone now
Alone with my broken heart
And life goes on
The war that wasn’t so great, fall from grace, can you hold my story?
Feeling your heart still beating
I go to sleep
Blindly reaching for you
But your heart skipped a beat
Life ends but love can survive
...dreaming of home and hoping to be remembered by his loved one should he fall. Inspired by Sian Price’s fantastic book “If you’re reading this - Last letters from the front line”.

Baby Come Back
04:21
|
|||
Only 16, when he went to war
I'll be just like my Daddy he swore
too young and too small, too small for conscription
Make me porage and then they'll have me
I'll lead from the front, he guaranteed
his devotion won fame, fame and promotion
he wrote, Mother dear
I'll come back never fear
to wipe away your tear
I say “just come back, my baby, come back”
I'll always treasure my note from the king
but I hated the war, it was a terrible thing
my son he was brave, he won the VC
He led from the front and won men's esteem
my beautiful child, I see in my dreams
my baby was brave, he didn't hear my plea
he wrote, Mother dear
I'll come back never fear
to wipe away your tear
I say “just come back, my baby, come back”
“Baby, come back”
“You didn’t come back”
...dedicated to Sergeant John Meikle VC MM, (11/9/1898-20/7/18) 4th Seaforth Highlanders.

Bring The Boys Home
03:06
|
|||
Jane waits for Donald
She’s waited all these years
It’s been four years in the Great War
Now she’s waiting on the pier
Their future was returning
There’s no more need for fear
“My handsome hero’s coming home
I can see the boat from here”
Oh mighty sea, bring the boys home
The storm raged all night
But these men had been at the Somme
The beasts ripped the Iolaire
Just a stone throw from home
Jane waited for Donald
He’d survived the German foe
Now his body would be swept ashore
Where the wild iris grows
Oh mighty sea, bring the boys home
And the horror of the western front
Came to Stornoway that morn’
Though seventy men were saved
Two hundred souls were gone
Oh mighty sea, bring the boys home
...dedicated to those who drowned on 1/1/1919 when the HMS Iolaire struck the Beasts of Holm and sank – a stone’s throw from home.

Catch 22 Again
02:04
|
|||
Catch 22 again
Killing our boys again
Why don’t we ever learn?
They told Willie the cause was right
It’s political dynamite
Why don’t they ever learn?
It’s happening again
Iraq and Afghanistan
Women and fellow man
Why don’t we ever learn?
Don’t believe the prime minister
Don’t believe all the Presidents
Why don’t they ever learn?
It’s happening again
There’s blood on our hands
...the continuing tale of lies and deception.
